Chapter Eleven

The kiss had happened several days ago, but things stayed largely the same afterward. Bryson had worried it would make things weird between them, but ultimately nothing changed at all. It turned out that the only person upset with him was Colleen, who confronted him on Friday wanting to know why he’d shunned her and not invited her to their study session. He had almost told her about everything. About Peter, about how it had upset him, about the kiss, and about Aidan. Instead, he told her it was complicated and that he’d been troubled about some things he felt like she might not understand. While unsatisfied with that answer, she had still forgiven him and then had promptly copied his Latin homework.

The three of them were sitting together at lunch on Tuesday, a first, when Aidan dropped a proposal in their laps. It was a bit out of left field; like he had perhaps just thought of it, but it was still a very interesting prospect.

“You guys want to hang out on Thursday night?” He asked around a mouthful of pasta salad. “I got a reprieve from lockdown because I volunteered to take the little kids out trick-or-treating. I have to be home by eleven, but they won’t last past about seven-thirty. I heard some guys in gym class talking about hanging out and having a bonfire. It sounds like fun. I can just tell my mom I’m going over to your place, Bryson, and she won’t bat an eye. She’s just glad I made friends with someone who isn’t a hoodlum. Her words, not mine.”

Bryson hadn’t been expecting an invitation to hang out on Halloween, but he was suddenly thankful that he had made no plans. His mom had extended the invite to hang out with her and Charlie at some stuffy costume party, but he would have preferred staying home alone and handing out candy to doing that. This seemed like a decent alternative though, and he cast a sideways look at Colleen in an attempt to judge her thoughts on the matter.

“I’m free, so I don’t mind joining in. I can be the driver,” he volunteered, taking a drink of chocolate milk. He wanted to do something for Halloween, sure, but also interested in spending more time with Aidan outside of school. He wasn’t sure if the kiss was a fluke or not, but he’d like the possibility of finding out.

Colleen took her time considering the offer, taking a bite of her burger, and then sipping on the Coke she’d gotten from the vending machine. She screwed the lid back on the bottle and then looked between them, letting out a feigned sigh. “Well, I guess,” she told them, nodding her head a little. “I have no better prospects on the table. Can Pete come?”

At the mention of Peter, Bryson’s face clouded over, and he suddenly found his potato chips fascinating. He saw Aidan looking at him in confusion, but Colleen thankfully didn’t seem to notice that anything was amiss.
